Regular readers of the blog might recall a few posts about my attempts to grow my own fungi. After some initial success, it all seems to have gone a bit pear-shaped and my mushroom box smells less of autumnal woods than it does of something dead.

Fortunately, we are bang in the middle of mushroom season and the fields and woods are heaving with edible fungi. Of course, knowing which ones will taste great fried in a little butter and which will put you in hospital can be tricky. The following guided walks, which all take place this weekend, can help you begin to figure out the fungi.

On Sunday at 4pm, there is a guided fungi walk in the Falls of Clyde Nature Reserve. It costs £6 and you’ll need to book in advance on this number: 01555 665 262

At Calderglen Country Park near East Kilbride, there will be a guided walk looking at the biology of fungi. It kicks off at 2pm on Saturday and is free but, again, the organisers want people to book in advance. Tel 01355 236644

Alternatively, the mushrooms and toadstools of Twechar near Kilsyth will be the talking point of a free ranger guided walk on Sunday from 2pm. Tel 01555 660190
