Even those of us who recognise the business end of a whisk must sometimes look at the mess on our plates and think ‘Where did it all go wrong?’

You’ve bought beautiful ingredients, prepped and cooked them exactly in the way that the bloke on the telly did the night before but the monstrosity on your plate looks nothing like the finely crafted food picture which the celeb chef whipped up seemingly effortlessly.

It must be trickery? Some sort of TV studio sleight of hand? No?

If you want to see with your own eyes how chefs transform raw ingredients into lip-smacking dishes then head for Edinburgh Farmers’ Market on Castle Terrace tomorrow. David Haetzman, head chef at the nearby Rutland, will be whizzing around the market buying ingredients which he will then cook at a field kitchen in the market.

‘I plan to buy most of my ingredients fresh from stall holders in the morning,’ says David. ‘The selected dishes will depend on what’s available, which is exactly how we plan our menu in the restaurant’

Guests will be treated to free samples and can take away discount vouchers to enjoy a meal at the Restaurant at The Rutland. David will hold four cookery demonstrations of 20 minutes each between 10am and 1pm.
