According to the headlines, it’s the coldest winter in thirty years. Pensioners in South Wales are burning books to keep warm; instead of breaking rocks, convicts are being ordered to clear snow and, at least according to The Daily Mail, supermarkets are witnessing panic-buying of warm clothes, staple foods and cat litter which is, apparently, great for gritting paths.

Assuming that you don’t need to worry about your cat litter supplies, what food will you be eating to get you through the cold weather? There is a theory, probably half-baked, that people who live in hot climates eat hot, spicy food because it encourages the body to cool down by sweating. Even so, a curry doesn’t sound like a bad idea as the cold north wind rattles the windows.

I’ve been eating a thick ham, bean, garlic and sage soup for the last couple of days and plan on getting a pot of carrot soup underway this evening. Soup always seems the ideal cold weather food not least because you can cradle the bowl in your shivering, blue-tinged fingers.

An alternative would be to pull on the balaclava, attach the crampons to the wellies and make good use of the nice, warm premises of 5pm’s member restaurateurs. We have teamed up with Edinburgh Restaurateurs Association who are running their annual Dine Around promotion in January and February. For good food at bank balance-friendly prices click here.
