The Market of Optimism will be helping Perth mark its 800th birthday

The Christmas credit card bills might have started to arrive but, compared to last January when we were all staring down the barrel of global economic implosion, there is plenty to grin about. Not least are all the promos that restaurants are running over the next couple of months as they try to get bums on seats.

The city of Perth is celebrating its 8ooth birthday this year with a packed schedule of special events. One of the most fun could be the street theatre spectacular which is the Market of Optimism, a surreal market from those far out japesters Mischief La Bas. It takes place on King Edward Street on Saturday 23 January.

The city’s restaurateurs are also doing their bit with some tasty special offers. During January and February, Number One The Bank and 63 Tay Street, both 5pm members, are offering diners a bottle of wine for a £1; a price which is not to be sniffed at.

In Edinburgh, new 5pm member La Concha is offering customers at dinner a free house cocktail during the month of Janauary. A glass of prosecco, orange juice and grenadine should set you up for dishes such as the roast fillet of halibut served with a saffron, red pepper and black olive risotto.

Last, but by no means least, let’s hear a big cheer for the 5pm January sale in which oodles of lovely restaurants are laying on meals for £12.
