Miguel's: great for discerning Rum Baba lovers

I’ve been lapping up this RetroDundee blog from a Dundonian who has moved down south. He has recently posted a strand looking at the bars and restaurants of Dundee in the Eighties. I spent most of my teenage years in Dundee in the Eighties and some of the restaurant names are familiar although most people ate out very rarely then, at least compared to now.

I like the restaurant reviews from the renowned critic Egon Boney. ‘Not in the good food guide’ he notes of one restaurant, a simple phrase that speaks volumes.

I’ve posted an ad from Miguel’s which was where my family would very occasionally go to mark a big celebration. It was deemed posh so I would have to wear a shirt and tie. I had long headbanger hair at the time and consequently looked a right muppet. Miguel’s was supposed to be a Spanish restaurant and, at the time, their Rum Babas were considered the height of sophistication.

A quarter of a century later, it would be fascinating to time travel back to Miguel’s and see what it was like. I could be wrong but, the last time I was back in Dundee, the site had become a chemist’s.

If you could go back and revisit some of the restaurants of yesteryear, where would you go?
