Tollcross in January . . . if you're drinking retsina
Tollcross in January . . . if you're drinking retsina

We know that 5pm blog readers are a cosmopolitan bunch who are as happy tucking in to taramasalata as they are getting outside of a plate of bangers and mash.Whether it be Cullen skink at Glasgow’s Blas or roast eel at Edinburgh’s Bonsai, your tastebuds are well travelled. But if you had to pick one neighbourhood that offered the greatest choice of world cuisines, where would you opt for?

There are lots of contenders for the most diverse neighbourhood to eat out in but, I reckon, that Edinburgh’s Tollcross must be close to the top of the list. Off the top of my head, I can think of an east African place, a euro-Thai joint, a Mexican, assorted Indian restaurants and two Chinese hot pot places. To these, we can add the 5pm members La Bagatelle, ITRI Italian, the Mediterranean dishes of Bisque Bar and Brasserie, the south Indian flavours of Mezbaan, and the trad menu at the Golf Tavern.

The latest to join the Tollcross United Nations of restaurants is My Big Fat Greek Kitchen, a Broughham Street restaurant whose name tells you most of what you need to know. Feta cheese pies, warming stews of gigantes beans and spicy sausages, grilled meats and meringues are all on the menu at this newly opened diner.
