A typical Edinburgh pub scene. Sort of.

I’ve just found this list which picks out Edinburgh as one of the best cities in the world to drink beer.

As an Edinburgh boy with a well hidden six pack, I’m inclined to agree.

Don’t get me wrong. Glasgow has some great bars.

Just the quickest flick through the start of 5pm’s Glasgow listings reveals Black Sparrow, Bar Soba, Arta and Biadh at Macsorley’s. Four very different bars but all ones where I would happily dip my beak into a glass of something cool.

But Edinburgh used to be a big brewing city and although almost all of the breweries are gone now, something of that heritage remains in places like The Abbotsford, the Cafe Royal and the King’s Wark.

Even relative newcomers like Ghillie Dhu, The Saint, Monteiths and Hawke and Hunter do a good job of cooly playing around with that old school elegance.

This sort of question depends entirely on your own tastes, preferences and prejudices but which bars best sum up your own town?
