Are certain foods more appealing to men than women?

I only ask because I recently received a press release about the new Bo’Vine steak house on Byres Road and the woman who sent it commented that although it might not be the most ‘ladylike’ of meals she loved a good steak.

Fair enough, you don’t need to be wearing Y-fronts to see the appeal in a thick slice of seared beef.

However, I would feel slightly peturbed if, say, I went out on a first date and the woman I was with ordered a sixteen ounce T-bone served bloody.

Equally, would she find it odd if I ordered a goats cheese salad as a starter followed by steamed fish and a cupcake dessert? I expect so.

Of course, you can take it too far. The Man Food website is so macho that you can almost smell the testosterone coming off the computer screen.

I suspect that it might actually be a spoof since I can’t imagine a dog eating their recipe for Frito Chili Pie never mind a bloke, no matter how hairy his back was.

Considerably less monobrowed is the Man Tested recipes site which lists beer as one of its main ingredient types.

However, if I was eighteen and lived in a Frat house then my favourite culinary bro would be the Food Dude on Spike.

Click through for his recipe for beer can chicken. As he puts it, ‘nothing says yum like a chicken with a beer can up its . . . ‘ well you can guess the rest.

Obviously, it’s too easy to generalise that men like beer and beef and burgers while women like salads, sushi and sugar cookies but only a man could have come up with this beautiful monstrosity: the drag racing barbecue.
