I stumbled across this slide show from a book called Hungry Planet: What The World Eats by a photographer called Peter Menzel.

It is not new. It dates back to 2006 but it’s one of the most compelling photo essays I’ve ever seen.

Menzel travelled the world photographing 30 families in 24 countries. The pictures show each family in their homes with a typical week’s food and what it cost in dollars.

It’s not just the differences between the richest and poorest families which are startling.

Just as gob-smacking are the similarities between what the different families in the richest parts of the world eat.

So the Japanese Ukita family list potato chips as one of their favourite foods while the Sicilian Manzo family love frozen fish sticks and hot dogs.

Pretty much everyone in the first world seems to have a thing for pizza.

Meanwhile, the Aboubakar family of Breidjing Camp in Chad are getting by on food that cost $1.23 for a week’s supply.
