In the New York Times magazine this week, lead restaurant critic Sam Sifton wrote that his job required him to dine at restaurants pretty much every day, and it times it can be a difficult task, not to mention an unhealthy one.

I know many won’t be feeling quite so sympathetic towards Sifton over this lament (someone else cooking for you every day? No washing up to do afterwards? Sign me up!). My resolve does waver slightly, however, when Sifton goes into a little more detail and explains that there have been times he has had to eat two lunches in one day, two dinners, lengthy tasting menus (some at 16 courses!)… then of course the unthinkable amount of calories consumed and the effort he has to put in at the gym just to stay in some kind of shape.

Not only that, the man had to sample the rather infamous ‘KFC Double Down Sandwich’ as mentioned in a previous post. Now that’s dedication.

My resolve has wavered slightly. Perhaps being a full-time food critic would be a bit much.

Weekend job, maybe?

What do you think the best and worst parts of being a food critic would be?
