There's a moose aboot the hoose at the Hillhead Bookclub

The West End of Glasgow has a new bar and 5pm has a new member in the form of the quirky Hillhead Bookclub.

It opened at the weekend on the former site of The Salon on Vinicombe Street and is already doing its best to stand out from its less anarchic competitors.

It describes itself as ‘A sanctuary for star crossed lovers, cross eyed lovers and those of us who just want a pint’ and lists moose-hunting, vegetarianism, meat-eating and ping pong among its many attractions.

Bingo, millions of DJs and a Sega Mega Drive add to the list of wonky  reasons to visit.

The menus are a hoot. From the brunch menu, diners have the option of Stavros the omelette on toast, a combo which features olives, feta and red onion.

On the dinner menu is a list of dishes which ‘yer maw almost certainly does better ( but it doesn’t hurt to try)’. Think along the lines of bangers and mash or braised lamb.

I also liked the starter of meatloaf with picallili which is listed as sounding ‘like an 80’s rock song…tastes better’.

If the cooking is as lively as the sense of humour then the Hillhead Bookclub could soon be on the best seller lists.
