What will your choice of burger say about your voting intentions tomorrow night?

I’m not sure if that is one of the best or worst headlines that I’ve ever inflicted on the 5pm blog so, moving on swiftly . . .

Unless you have been hanging out on the dark side of the moon recently then you will be aware that tomorrow is a general election day in the UK. All the parties have managed to put their feet in their mouths at some point over the last few weeks of campaigning but, tomorrow evening, a couple of Glasgow’s restaurants are giving voters the chance to put something rather more tasty in their gobs.

At Sloans, they have created a one off, election night burger menu.

As well as watching the election results on a big screen as they come in, Sloans is offering a choice of five burgers, each of which has a more or less tenuous link to the main political parties. Most of them are more groansworthy than the above headline.

The Cleggy

Anyway, you can choose between a sausage and black pudding burger with Brown sauce (Geddit!?!), The Cleggy gourmet beef burger topped off with a fried egg and tomato relish or Cameron’s Favourite, a gourmet chorizo burger with spicy salsa, a choice which I don’t get the reference for. Do only toffs eat chorizo?

If none of these candidates whet your appetite, you will also have the opportunity to choose between an SNP-inspired haggis burger or, if Green is your thing, there’s a homemade falafel burger served with a green salad and topped off with a sweet chilli and red pepper sauce.

They are available on the night for a recession-busting £4.50 which will be the most anyone will be able to afford for a meal out next week when the winning party unveils its real economic policies.

Serious Analysis

For a more serious take on the night’s events, the ever dynamic Cookie on Glasgow’s Southside is serving up an election night special hosted by leading political commentator, writer and local resident Gerry Hassan.

Cookie co-owner, Domenico Del Priore, said, ‘In addition to live television coverage on the big screen, Gerry Hassan will be providing his expert analysis on the unfolding events as it comes in, as well as hosting our election night quiz with Cookie prizes. And if all that wasn’t enough, we’ll be hosting a morning panel discussion as the dust settles and Britain wakes up to its new government.’

I suspect that we will all need a hangover cure in more ways than one come Friday morning.
