Fathers are notoriously tricky to buy gifts for. Back in the Seventies, planning for Fathers’ Day was all pretty straight forward. Whisky, cigars, socks or a bottle of eye-watering aftershave (who can forget Brut?) were all acceptable.

These days, it is less clear cut. Speaking to friends who are fathers, especially those with nippers or tweenies, the one thing they really want is time off from their own offspring.

That’s why Dads do gardening or cultivate similarly uncool hobbies. It’s not ‘cos they like them. It’s just a way of getting away, temporarily, from their nearest and dearest.

If this sound familiar to your family situation then you may be interested in the hook and cook offer being run by 5pm member The Horseshoe Inn.

Based in Peebles, The Horseshoe has teamed up with the Kailze Fishery to let guests try their hand at fly-fishing and then eating the results.

Participants in the event will get to catch their own trout in the River Tweed and Kailze Fishery and bring it back to The Horseshoe Inn, just outside of Peebles, to be cooked by head chef, Patrick Bardoulet.

In the unlikely event of your old man catching nothing then Patrick can serve up any fish on the day’s menu and when people ask if he caught it, your Dad can fib.

The actual fishing will be supervised by the professionals from Tweed Guide, who will ensure that all fish are taken from sustainable stock.

The lunch deal, which includes fishing and lunch, is £59.50 and is available Tuesday to Friday.
