Homer: the patron saint of doughnut lovers

If you lived in the States then you would have bounced out of bed this morning happy in the knowledge that today is National Doughnut Day.

To celebrate this great occasion, Dunkin’ Donuts are giving away a free donut with every drink purchased.

As well as being a good marketing idea, it seems to be a big deal in America with the doughnut having the same place in the national psyche as fish ‘n’ chips does here.

I’d alway thought of the humble doughnut as a bit of a joke food, the staple diet of Homer Simpson and cops on stake outs.

It seems I’m wrong.

National Doughnut Day is not just a gimmick and a red letter day for junk food lovers.

Apparently, it was founded by the Chicago Salvation Army in 1938 and was originally intended to honor the women who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I.
