Gordon Ramsay with Jian Wang and Juan Zhou

Today is the launch date for a new branch of Chop Chop on Commercial Street in Leith.

Since the original opened on Edinburgh’s Morrison street in 2006, it has won plenty of admirers for its authentic north eastern Chinese food and has twice been nominated for the Best Speciality Restaurant at the Scottish Restaurant Awards.

The business got a huge boost last year when the chef and owner Jian Wang appeared on the F Word with a certain Mr Ramsay.

Chop Chop may not have ultimately triumphed in the telly competition but the reservations phone started ringing while the program was still being broadcast and pretty much hasn’t stopped since.

One result is that Jian and her husband Roy deceided to expand the business. They surveyed their customers who said that they would like the new Chop Chop to be just like the old one.

This means that the canteen style decor remains and the core of the menu is still Jian’s fantastic dumplings.

What’s new is that the Leith Chop Chop will have private dining facilities and a Chinese BBQ on Sunday afternoons.

If it is anything like the Morrison Street branch then the new Chop Chop will book up fast. Alternative options for eating out in Leith include 5pm members The Raj On The Shore, Britannia Spice, Malmaison and A Room In Leith.
