'Get your goat' takes on a new meaning at the Royal Highland Show

The 170th Royal Highland Show gets underway at Ingliston today and it’s a must see for anyone interested in good food and where it comes from.

As well as a massive livestock display where visitors can glance over the pride of the country’s Scots Dumpys, Blue Faced Leicesters and Silkies, there are loads of family-oriented events from tug o’wars to show jumping via bike stunt teams and, that old kids’ favourite, axe-throwing.

The whopping great Food Hall has over a hundred producers and retailers selling the best that Scotland’s larder has to offer while an exhibtion entitled from Field to Pint outlines the beer trail from the barley fields to the bar. The good work of over twenty of Scotland’s independent brewers will be available to illustrate this miracle.

Perhaps most exciting for the dedicated food fan will be the cookery theatre featuring the talents of Tony Borthwick of the Plumed Horse in Leith; Lady Claire Macdonald from Kinloch Lodge on the Isle of Skye and Tom Lewis, the chef proprietor of Monachyle Mhor at Balquhidder and contestant on the BBC’s Great British Menu.

5pm member restaurants are well represented with Karen Mackay, Head Chef at Channings, Patrick Bardoulet of The Horseshoe Inn at Eddleston, and Iggy Campos from Iggs in Edinburgh all rattling the pans.

The Royal Highland Show runs until Sunday.
