Your correspondent recently received a press release puffing the launch of a new ‘Thank Krug, it’s Friday’ promo at the Punch Bowl in Mayfair.

Apparently, the champagne house thought it would be a spiffing wheeze to launch an ‘informal yet exclusive experience’ during which two portions of fish ‘n’ chips and a half bottle of Krug was only £75. That’s seventy-five pounds for a half bottle of bubbles and two fish suppers.

I don’t want to come over as a straw-chewing yokel still coming to terms with the concept of paper money but it’s hard to imagine the same deal flying off the shelves north of the border or indeed south of the Thames.

It’s not so much the price that sticks in the craw. It’s the thought of some perma-tanned Sloan poking at the fish ‘n’ chips in mild amusement and then sipping on the champagne in order to wash away the taste of slumming it with such unthinkable prole food.

‘Informal yet exclusive’. Grrrrrr!
