Iain Spink and his famous Arbroath smokies are one of the attractions at the Big Tent Festival

Large numbers of Scottish festival producers will be spending most of tonight crossing and uncrossing their fingers while praying for the sun to come out over the next few days.

There are a number of big festivals taking place in Scotland this weekend and a couple of them have a distinct foodie bent.

Perhaps the most interesting of them from a nosh perspective is the Big Tent Festival just outside the village of Falkland in Fife. It’s billed as Scotland’s Environmental Festival so, along with some great bands, the One Planet Food Village promises food from local producers, a Slow Food tasting table and talks on artisan cheese-making, among many other subjects.

The ins and outs of ethical food production and sustainability are all very important but not the mouth-watering of subjects so we’ll finish the Big Tent plug by mentioning the fact that there will be spit-roasted pork and beef from the Falkland Estate on sale.

Big Tent starts tomorrow and finishes on Sunday.

Much further north, the Sutherland Show takes place in Dornoch tomorrow. As well as offering a rare chance to watch non-American wrestling, the show features the ‘Blas an fhàsaich’ or Flavour of the Wilderness festival which is designed to showcase the best of Highland food and drink.
