View of the Old Course from Rocca

Your correspondent once tried to smack a golf ball down a fairway and ended up with the golf club thirty yards nearer the hole while the ball finished behind me.

Much to the relief of groundskeepers everywhere, I’ve never touched a mashieniblick since.

However, the Open tees off in St Andrews later this month and there’s a new restaurant in town eager to welcome all the fans.

The Rocca Bar and Grill is a swish new restaurant in the Macdonald Rusacks Hotel. It has been set up by Adrian Pieraccini who had previously run the Rocpool Reserve hotel and Rocpool Rendezvous restaurant in Inverness.

It overlooks the 18th hole of the Old Course but the menu is just as attention-grabbing.

The grill selection of steaks would please any clubhouse regular but there’s also a good variety of Italian dishes.

Think along the lines of fritto misto made with crispy tempura squid, prawns & whitebait with apple and saffron aioli or the fresh tagliatelle with black truffle and a wild mushroom and tarragon cream sauce.

It will be interesting to see how it gets on. If it’s successful, might it be rolled out to other Macdonald Hotels like 5pm member the Macdonald Cardrona in Peebles?
