Roby Brydon and Steve Coogan put the comedy into a la carte

Cooking has been a mainstay of the reality TV schedules for years now but, with the possible exception of Lenny Henry’s Chef!, there has not been much in the way of a comedy and cooking crossover.

That looks set to change this autumn with the BBC lining up two shows that hope to find the funny side of the catering trade.

Roby Brydon and Steve Coogan are lined up to star in The Trip, a six part sitcom which follows the fortunes of a newspaper food critic and his friend on a reviewing commission around the Lake District.

On his blog, Brydon complained that filming the series meant he put on eight pounds in four weeks.

No to be outdone, Alan Davies is swapping the murder mysteries of Jonathan Creek for the heat of the kitchen in a new Beeb sitcom called Whites.

He plays Roland White, a once promising chef whose career has gone off the boil.

I suspect that I may be in a minority but, for my money, the Swedish chef from The Muppets was the greatest comedy chef ever.
