As I mentioned last week it’s nomination time for this years Scottish Restaurant Awards. One of the award categories which caught my interest was for Best Pub Grub of the Year.

Aided in no so small part by the recent smoking ban, the last few years has seen countless gastropubs open their doors to the public – offering us good-value, top quality food in a relaxed and informal environment.

However, there are some who feel that this recent focus on food been detrimental to the standard of drinks available in Britain’s gastropubs. According to this recent article in the Guardian, the rise of the gastropub has coincided with a gradual decline in the quality of beer available throughout the UK.

The article got me wondering about which gastropubs still serve quality beers and lagers? Based on personal experience I feel that there are many gastropubs across Scotland which have been successful in satisfying the growing demand for quality pub grub without comprising the quality of drinks on offer. My local, for example, has a plentiful supply of ales from locations as diverse as Arran, Broughton, and Strathaven.

Does your local pub manage to balance quality food with an interesting and diverse range of drinks? If so, why not reward them with a nomination for best pub grub of the year at this years Scottish Restaurant Awards.
