The Pelican Cafe has just opened on the former Prego site opposite the Kelvingrove on Argyle Street.

The idea of local, seasonal and sustainable sourcing is at the heart of what they offer with the names of their suppliers proudly displayed on the menus.

Oysters, fish, crustacea and game are all prominent along with Orkney Gold steaks and rose veal from the Isle of Bute.

Refreshingly, their beers and wines are sold at retail price plus a £1 mark-up on beer and a fiver on each bottle of wine.

Over in Edinburgh, there have been a couple of recent launches in the Leith/Newhaven areas.

The Port of Siam is a new Thai on Pier Place. The menu looks a little more authentic than most with trad dishes such as the shredded green papya salad along with more contemporary creations such as the lobster tagliatelle with sweet basil.

Unsurprisingly, given their harbour-side location, seafood plays a large part on the Port of Siam’s menu.

The same could be said of what’s on offer at Guchhi, a new Indian seafood restaurant on Leith’s Commercial Street. Think along the lines of clams cooked in a coconut massala or baked scallops in a Bombay Duck sauce.
