Tapela: premises in Bath Street, heart in Barcelona

The blog is rolling out the red carpets for a couple of new restaurants which have recently joined 5pm.

In Glasgow, Tapela has opened in the Bath Street premises which were vacated when The Dining Room departed.

It’s run by the Partners team who are already responsible for Tattie Macs in the West End; The Partners Bistro in Bearsden and the Partners Italian Bistro on the Great Western Road.

Tapela, as you may have guessed, takes its cue from Spanish tapas but its menu is rather more ambitious than the familiar list of Costa Brava favourites.

There are meatballs and calamari on the menu but they sit beside dishes like the pan-fried, hand-dived scallops with creamed curried leeks and crisp serrano ham or the braised haunch of venison with Rioja, pancetta and button onions.

You can check their 5pm offers here.

In Edinburgh, The Scotch of St James has replaced the long running Cuba Norte on Morrison Street.

It’s a quirky place with antlers and cute, vintage, bondage comics on the stripped stone walls. The food flies the flag for Scotland with salads of Dunsyre Blue, pears and walnuts; the Scotch take on mince ‘n’ tatties; haggis and a grill selection.
