Speyside's distilleries: at the heart of a dram fine time

If you are interested in the royal nuptials then you have probably already bagged your space on the sofa/pavement outside Westminster.

If you aren’t really all that bothered or just quite happy to watch the highlights on the telly then step this way. We have alternative ways to make good use of the bank holiday weekend.

The Spirit of Speyside whisky festival tops your blogger’s list of things to do. From today until next Thursday, whisky’s heartlands will be thronged with visitors from all over the world, as well as hunners of Scots, all intent on celebrating the national tipple.

If you really want to push the boat out then there’s the chance to sample one of the country’s oldest whiskies – the new release of a Generations Glenlivet 70 year old malt at Gordon & MacPhail’s Elgin headquarters on Saturday. Along with five other rather special Glenlivets, the tasting will punch a £350 hole in your pocket.

Alternatively, you could go for the carry-out option and buy a bottle at £13,000.

Not that you need such deep pockets for most of the events. Steam train journeys along the Whisky Line; smuggler trail walks and numerous live music events with a whisky theme are all available at a fraction of the price.
