The science of cocktails is one of the research areas at this year's Edinburgh International Festival of Science.

Edinburgh’s Science Festival runs 9-22 April and, as ever, there is plenty to interest we nosebag enthusiasts.

On Tuesday 12 April, Prof David Hume of the Roslin Institute will be looking at how the world’s farming industry will cope with the seemingly irreconcilable demands for increased meat production and better animal welfare.

The next day, at the Botanics, a panel of top psychologists will be looking at the science of wine and cocktails and asking whether expensive wine really tastes better than cheap plonk.

Charles Maclean: an enthusiastic whisky researcher

The day after that, the inimitable Charles Maclean will be sniffing his way through the science of whisky at the Whisky Heritage Centre. You can conduct your own research on this important subject over dinner in the centre’s well reviewed Amber restaurant.

Me? I’m looking forward to a sleepover at the Zoo.
