The Vat and Fiddle at the foot of Lothian Road has been replaced by the Red Squirrel bar.

Part of the Fuller Thomson bar portfolio which also owns Duke’s Corner and Jute in Dundee plus The Holyrood in Edinburgh, Red Squirrel is a beer lover’s paradise.

As well as good old Tennents, they offer around twenty different brews on draught and they range from familiar beers such as Guinness to more exotic Belgian raspberry beers, Blue Moon American wheat beer and a range of Scottish beers from BrewDog classics to Black Isle Blondes.

Beer battered haddock; pork and leek sausages; steak sarnies and macaroni cheese are among the edibles along with a lip-smacking range of gourmet burgers.

The menu is pretty entertaining in itself. The desserts are introduced as ‘Puds. That Greg bloke off Masterchef would literally wet himself’.

It’s an image that few would wish to dwell on but with a list that includes sticky toffee pudding, crumble and a knickerbocker glory, they are almost certainly right.
