Could scales soon be a common sight in Scottish restaurants?

There are a couple of interesting food pieces in the weekend’s papers.

On a Scottish tip, The Telegraph’s Xanthe Clay made a trip to Bute and wrote about Iain Mckellar’s edible seaweed company.

The blog has mentioned Just Seaweed before but The Telegraph’s piece goes into a lot more detail than we have space for. It’s a good read if you want to learn some more about a food which appears to be rocketing up the popularity stakes.

The Observer’s Food Monthly magazine celebrated its tenth birthday yesterday and they marked the occasion with a long essay looking at the changes in the UK’s food culture over the last ten years.

From the wake-up call of BSE in 2001 to the seemingly unstoppable rise of celeb chefs, it’s all in there.

The blog also liked this video report on kilo restaurants from the BBC man’s in Sao Paolo in Brazil. Increasingly popular with the city’s busy workers, kilo restaurants are self service buffets where customers fill their plates and then weigh them.

Unlike the eat-all-you-want buffets which are so popular here, the Brazilians pay only for the food which they have chosen. According to the report, the idea is so popular that even high end restaurants have adopted it.

Could it catch on here?
