Fruit tart: part of the government's recommended five a day

This scribbler has always had a soft spot for French food so it was a big ‘Bonjour pal’ to the news that French Fancies had opened on London Street in Edinburgh.

A basement deli and quirky cafe, it is run by a French couple called Berangere and Thomas. Bergangere looks after the front of house. Thomas does all the cooking having learnt his chops working for the great Paul Bocuse in Lyons.

From flavoured olive oil to fruit tarts via rum babas and macarons, it’s the sort of place where you pop in for a coffee and come out with a bag full of goodies.

A personal recommendation goes to the saucissons which Thomas’ father makes in France. I would tell you to buy the pork and goat’s cheese variety but I bought the last one yesterday.

It’s a fun wee place and it also has all the Harry Potter books in French if you want to brush up on your language skills while scoffing a pecan brownie.

Naturally, 5pm has plenty of French restaurants signed up. L’escargot Bleu, just around the corner from French Fancies on Broughton Street, is a cracker.
