It's going to get weird in the Merchant City this weekend

The Merchant City Festival launches in Glasgow today and the area’s bars and restaurants are stoking the festival’s fires with numerous fun-filled events.

The blog liked the sound of The Sloans Project. It’s an opera which has been created from people’s memories of Sloans. As one of Glasgow’s oldest pubs, the place has played a key part in many of the city’s residents’ lives with engagements, marriages, birthdays and anniversaries all being celebrated under its roof.

The opera brings all these memories together in a story which travels through the three levels of Sloans and culminates in a big, interactive finale in the ballroom on the third floor. Tonight, audiences are being encouraged to dress up for the show in smart evening dress or Victorian costume.

Starting from tomorrow, there will also be a revolving selection of markets operating in Candleriggs.

Among the many 5pm member restaurants taking part, Boteco do Brasil is hosting Cuban dance nights; the City Merchant restaurant is putting on a performance by singer/songwriter Christine Bovill and Metropolitan is holding a Scottish BBQ, live music and fancy dress pirate party.

If you want to have a bite to eat while enjoying the street theatre and bands which will be performing in the area then you can check out all the offers available from 5pm members in the Merchant City by clicking here.
