Jacqueline O'Donnell taking some prawns to task

The opening weekend of the Edinburgh Fringe means that the capital will be as crazy as a bag of cut snakes this weekend.

If that doesn’t sound like your cup of tea then take a look at the Riverside Seafood Festival which is taking place at the spiffy new Riverside Museum this weekend.

There will be cooking demos from fine chefs such as Jacqueline O’Donnell of The Sisters; Mr Quigley of Red Onion and Joe Queen who looks after both Camerons and Minsky’s at The Hilton.

Naturally, there will be a distinct maritime flavour to everything; not least the local producers who will be showing off their wares.

The list includes Loch Duart with their smoked and fresh salmon; Caledonian Oysters; MacCallums of Troon and their BBQ fish; JH Milne selling hot and smoked mackerel; Loch Fyne Oysters and their smoked salmon and the Waterfront Bar and Restaurant who will be doing marvelous things to scallops.

Of course, there will be a bar and bands kids’ entertainment but if you fancy your knife skills then you might want to chance your hand, or at least your fingers, at the Scottish Oyster Opening Championships which kick off at around 3pm on Sunday.

The best oyster shucker on the day will win a place at the World Oyster Opening Championships in Galway.
