A cigar maker at work in the Partagas factory in Havana

Edinburgh’s Hotel du Vin are holding a cigar dinner on Thursday 8th September. The original plan was to hold the event  in the hotel’s cigar bothy in the courtyard but demand has been so great that it may move to the Veuve Clicquot Courtyard.

The £70 event kicks off at 7pm and comprises a four course dinner, drinks, cigars and a talk from Simon Chase who is probably the UK’s leading cigar authority.

Way back in 2000, I was invited to a Glasgow Cigar Club dinner to write a newspaper piece (it doesn’t seem to be on the paper’s website but you can track it from here if you’re interested).

Simon Chase gave a talk at the dinner and, if you like cigars, then it was absolutely fascinating. Even if you are not a stogie-lover then his tales of meeting Fidel Castro in Cuba and other cigar-related anecdotes make for a cracking night out.

Writing on the Scotsman’s Whisky website, Stephen McGinty has a good piece on the resurgence of interest in cigars and the restaurants which are trying to cater for cigar lovers such as Edinburgh’s Hotel du Vin and, in Glasgow, the 29 private member’s club, Hotel du Vin and Corinthian.
