It’s festival time in Edinburgh which means that every square foot of space from phone boxes to underground vaults is being turned into a venue.

New places to eat are also popping up in unorthodox spots.

Fred Berkmiller, owner of L’Escargot Bleu and L’Escargot Blanc restaurants, has opened a new cafe in the French Institute on Randolph Place.

Coinciding with the festival, the Bistrot de L’Institut will run until the 25th of August in the space that used to house the fondly remembered Café Odile.

It will be open from today from 10am until late as a fully licensed café and beer garden. After the last couple of days, the idea of drinking outside may seem fairly remote but, should the sun ever come out, then it will be a glorious spot for something cold and wet.

Artisan French cheese, regional charcuterie and snackettes such as Croque Monsieur sarnies and fish soup are the sort of thing that appear on the menu along with beer from Brittany and cider imported from Normandy.
