Leith Walk in Edinburgh is always an interesting place to eat and drink not least because the area’s comparatively low rents attract businesses that fall outside the mainstream.

Bars like the beertastic Brass Monkey and Bar Boda, Joe Pearce and The Victoria (all run by Swedish Anna and Mike) have done a lot to modernise the area’s previous reputation for old mans’ bars while the Walk’s dining options often intrigue.

The number of Polish diners on The Walk may be dropping but there are plenty of other off the beaten track options. Punjab’n de Rasoi, a voluntary restaurant run by Sikh women chefs is making a name for itself while Los Cardos has been quietly but confidently riding the current wave of new school Tex-Mex.

The latest to join the fray is Frankfurter Eck which hopes to open Edinburgh’s eyes to the delights of German food. It’s small and not much to look at but its heart is in the right place.

Think trad German sausages with white cabbage; classic pork schnitzels and currywurst, the ever popular streetfood which mixes sausage with curry sauce.

Desserts include pancakes stuffed with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce plus apple strudel.

It all looks hearty stuff for cold Edinburgh nights and the prices will warm the cockles of your wallet as well.
