Carol Kidd will be recreating the jazz halls of Thirties Shanghai

According to the Chinese lunar calendar, the year of the Dragon gets underway on Monday 23rd January.

To celebrate the Chinese New Year, the Millennium Hotel on George Square is holding a New Year’s Eve Banquet on Sunday 22nd January.

The hotel has flown in a crack kitchen team from the Millennium Hotel Equatorial in Shanghai to prepare a traditional Chinese banquet.

Jazz singer Carol Kidd will be providing the tunes on the evening. The jazz halls of Thirties Shanghai will provide the musical theme.

Interestingly, Kidd performed in China way back in 1994 which made her the first Western artist to be invited to perform in the country for 25 years.

The evening kicks off at 7pm. You can book tickets, from £50.98, through 5pm by clicking here. It looks like being a fantastic evening.

The celebration is part of a three day programme of events taking place around the Chinese New Year.

The Millennium Hotel will also play host to Tai Chi taster sessions; lantern making and story telling sessions; tea ceremonies and Chinese cooking demonstrations courtesy of exec chef Chew Kian Seng from Shanghai.

All the events are in association with the Takeaway China organisation which aims to showcase Chinese culture.

If all that has made you feel slightly peckish, you can browse 5pm’s selection of Chinese restaurants in Glasgow here.
