Judging the perfect pie is a tricky business

As regular readers may have noticed, the 5pm blog is always ready to say ‘Aye to a pie’ and many recent posts have had a pie-shaped tinge to them.

I’ve just realised why. Today is the day when the winner of the 13th World Scotch Pie Championships is announced. Judging took place at Carnegie College, Dunfermline, way back in November last year but it is only today, at 2.30pm, that the country’s top pieman will be announced.

As we wait for the announcement to be made, here’s a brief diversion. It’s the Telegraph’s predictions for 2012 foodie trends. Some of them are a bit behind the curve (we fingered pickling and Nordic cuisine twelve months ago) but the thought of increased doughnut consumption doesn’t sound so bad.
