Neil Forbes, head chef at Cafe St Honore and Scottish Chef of the Year, is an ambassador for the Science on a Plate project

Last night, the blog pulled on its battered journo hat and slouched up to the Scottish Parliament for the launch of the Science on a Plate series of events which are mainly taking place in Edinburgh’s lovely Royal Botanic Garden.

The underlying purposes of the events are to increase awareness about food security and try to encourage young people into the sort of scientific jobs that could help ensure food security.

All of which is very important but unlikely to have crowds battering down the doors at the ticket office.

So, much like a spooful of sugar helping the medicine go down, the organisers have come up with some rather tasty events to illustrate their message.

Currently running in the gardens is the Science on a Plate exhibition which illustrates where the food on our plates comes from and how it gets there.

The exhibition runs alongside the Botanics’ Edible Garden project which aims to show people how to grow their own veg; a sort of personalised version of food security.

The exhibits and the project are the precursor to a ten day series of events which kick off in full from Saturday 31 March. Cookery demos, a foraging walk and breakfast, sustainability talks, chocolate tastings and an aphrodisiac canapes and cocktails reception are among the highlights.

You can find the full programme here and we’ll remind you of some of the more exciting events nearer the time.
