The Daily Mail found another excuse to publish its Rab C photo today when a survey of cab drivers seemed to reveal that people from Edinburgh were more likely to tip than people from almost any other part of the UK.

Apparently, people in Brighton are the most likely to tip followed by people in Edinburgh, Oxford, Glasgow and Plymouth.

According to the survey, the Welsh are the least likeliest to tip. Expect howls of protest from the South Wales Evening Post very soon.

On a similar topic, a few years ago, a fish restaurant in Edinburgh used to run a pay what you want night every Tuesday. Most people would pay the going rate or even slightly more.

However, the restaurateur told me that they had to stop the practice every Festival when the restaurant had lots more foreign customers than usual.

Apparently, Italian customers underpaid by so much that the restaurant was losing money.

Naturally, the restaurateur was very reluctant to pin this on any sort of innate Italian stinginess but it did make him wonder if fish and seafood was considerably cheaper in Italy at that time.

Sticking with the Daily Mail, check this cringeworthy ad from the Seventies in which McDonald’s tries to entice African American customers with a horribly misconceived piece of marketing.
