Die Hard: best enjoyed with sun-dried tomatoes

The 5pm blog can’t face being too serious first thing on a Monday morning so we bring you news of a recent scientific study/press release which details which foods we should eat to enhance our movie-viewing pleasure.

According to research commissioned by the movie-streaming service blinkbox, it’s possible to tailor the meals we eat to match certain film genres. Neuroscientist Jack Lewis looked for clues as to the foods that influence our moods. Using this knowledge, the good doctor identified the active chemical ingredients found in everyday foods that affect our brains and emotions. He then matched these to different genres of films.

His results may surprise you. To get the most from a romantic film, he suggests that viewers curl up with a spicy curry in order to boost testosterone. Am I alone in thinking that rogan josh is not necessarily synonymous with romance?

For action movies, he suggests sun-dried tomatoes coated in cocoa powder – a nauseous combo said to raise noradrenalin levels which promote feelings of excitement.

To really enjoy a horror film, Dr Lewis recommends chicken marinated in freshly brewed coffee. It’s a recipe which he reckons will ‘take you out of your comfort zone and raise levels of anxiety’.

He may have a point with that last pairing. Chicken marinated in coffee would certainly induce feelings of dread, fear and then panic at the thought of having to eat it.

Dr Lewis may well be a brilliant neuroscientist but he sure ain’t a cook.
