Curry: part of Glasgow’s DNA

Glasgow’s love affair with curry has been well documented and recognised by numerous awards – there are lots of very good reasons why the city has been voted the Curry Capital of the UK four times out of a possible nine.

It has been argued that the city’s Indian restaurants have changed the face of curry in the whole UK. Restaurants in other cities argue the point but the Shish Mahal has strong claims to have invented the chicken tikka masala, a dish which is often cited as Britain’s favourite meal.

Now Monir Mohammed, the man behind the Mother India and Wee Curry Shop restaurants, has decided to tell the story of Glasgow and curry with his latest venture: The Glasgow Curry Shop.

Taking over the Wee Curry Shop on Ashton Lane, the revamped restaurant is covered in memorabilia from Glasgow curry houses of the past.

From the Creme de la Creme, at one point Europe’s largest Indian restaurant, to the old Koh-i-Noor which collapsed into the the River Kelvin, many of the city’s most famous Indian restaurants are remembered on story boards and in pictures.

Roy Beers, writing in the Glasgow West End website, has more info here.

If all this curry talk has put you in the mood for a masala, then you can browse all the Indian restaurants on 5pm’s Glasgow listings by clicking here.

There are loads of great deals available and we’ll make special mention of Kebabish Grill. The Victoria Road restaurant is  a new addition to 5pm and is currently offering two courses from their 5pm a la carte menu for £12.
