The 5pm blog spent an enjoyable afternoon yesterday sampling Melville’s Craft Lager as it launched in the gardens on top of Edinburgh’s Glasshouse Hotel.

Real fruit

Available in strawberry and raspberry fruit flavours, it’s based on a crisp lager which is flavoured with cold-pressed fruit. Apparently, 20% of each 275ml bottle is made up of fruit – that’s about four strawberries and eight raspberries per bottle. We’re not sure that many docs would agree but there was much speculation as to whether or not this would count towards one of your five a day.

It’s a refreshing, summery drink and, at 4.1% ABV, it won’t knock your socks off.

Melville’s is made by Innis & Gunn, the Edinburgh-based brewers who make a range of beers aged in oak casks which have been used in whisky and spirit production.

Melville’s fruit beers and the full Innis & Gunn range, including many hard to find bottlings, are available at Innis & Gunn @ 32 Potterrow, their festival pop-up bar.

2 course meal offer

As it happens, the 5pm Big Deal site is also running a two course meal and drink offer with the bar. You can find the full details here but, essentially, two people can tuck into a starter and main course (supplements on steak dishes) plus a bottle of Innis & Gunn for a rather tasty £22.
