Burns Burger at the George (2)

As you might imagine the 5pm Restaurant blog inbox is currently fit to burst with restaurants and drinks companies suggesting how their services might fit into Burns Night.

Fair enough. With only three sleeps to go until the official Burns Night celebrations, this is the time to promote your products.

Less welcome was the puff from a major supermarket wondering if we had any Easter egg features planned. Easter? Pffft, we still haven’t finished our choco oranges from Christmas.

Bard’s Burger

Tempus Restaurant at the George Hotel in Edinburgh has come up with a fun wheeze to celebrate Burns Night.

Stewart Jarvie, Executive Chef at Tempus Edinburgh, has created the Bard’s Burger.

The half pound burger is made with haggis mixed with venison mince and served with redcurrant chutney, jenga neeps and jenga chips.

The 8 oz burger comes with a dram of 12 year old Balvenie Double Wood and is available for £18.95 per person.

Free burger

Now this is the fun bit. The first ten diners who can recite Address to a Haggis on Burns Night, without any help, will be able to enjoy their Bard’s Burger and dram for free.

Stewart, who is a member of Masterchefs of Great Britain, said: ‘I’ve created thousands of Burns Suppers over the years and wanted to do something a little bit different this year by taking the key ingredients and giving them a more modern twist. Everyone loves a great burger and the moisture from the minced venison complements the dry spiciness of the haggis nicely to create a beautiful flavour.’

We like to think that Burns would smile at that one.

Altogether now: ‘Fair fa’ your honest, sonsie face…’
