Blue bear

The newspaper industry follows certain patterns. For instance, the third Monday of any new year is always hailed as the most depressing day of the year.

Blue Monday

Bad weather, a lack of sunlight and post-festive bills are all supposed to add up to a blue Monday and we’re all advised to take a duvet day.

The 5pm Restaurant blog thinks it’s a load of old tosh but, just in case you’re feeling down, here is one reason to be cheerful. The Blue Bear is a new cafe which is penciled in to open on Edinburgh’s Brandon Terrace, Canonmills, next Monday.

It replaces Moo Cafeteria which was previously on the site.

Table tennis

Breakfasts and brunch seem to be the house speciality but what really caught this blogger’s eye was that The Blue Bear had been proposing to offer table tennis.

In London, table tennis bar restaurants such as Bounce are proving a hit having already taken Manhattan by storm thanks to places like SPiN.

Top spin & tea

Sipping an Americano while working on your backspin was to have been on the menu in Blue Bear’s basement but, at least for the time being, it seems that the council has put the kibosh on the idea.

When supermarkets like Tesco are trying to muscle in on the independent cafe market, the true independents need to have strong, unique selling points to make themselves stand out.

Wiff waff with your breakfast waffles may turn out to be a passing fad but it would certainly have made The Blue Bear stand out in Canonmills – an area not short of cafes.

We’ll follow the debate and let you know if the Blue Bear gets to wield a tennis bat.
