Ashoka Restaurants have opened a branch in Edinburgh

The Ashoka family of Indian restaurants has long been prominent in Glasgow’s restaurant scene.

In fact, I don’t know if this still holds true but, for a while, Ashoka was billed as being the largest Indian restaurant chain in Europe.

Hanover Street

After many years of expansion in the West, the first Ashoka recently opened in Edinburgh. Called the Ashoka World Buffet, the new venture has launched on the Hanover Street premises formerly occupied by Tapa.

Buffet

As the name makes clear, buffets are a large part of the restaurant’s offer with the £9 lunch buffet running from noon to 5pm and the £16 dinner buffet running 5pm to midnight.

A la carte

Ashoka World Buffet also offers a takeaway and an a la carte menu. As well as all the Indian starters and main courses that you might expect, there is also a short range of pizza and pasta dishes on the a la carte.

You can browse the Ashoka Indian restaurants on 5pm from here. The company also operates the Ashoka Cook School Restaurant in Linwood.

The cook school is run by Jiggy Majhu. The wife of Ashoka-owner Sanjay, Jiggy has written a recipe book called Simply Jiggy: The Ashoka Cookschool Cookbook. The book reveals the secrets of how to make some of the Ashoka restaurants’ most popular curries.
