Edinburgh’s News Room has just launched a new edition. Hot off the press, the latest incarnation of the Leith Street bar is now known as The Newsroom Bar and Eatery. Owners Duddingston Leisure have spent a reported £100,000 on the revamp.

Striking window display

The most striking feature of the new look is the floor to ceiling window display of jam jars filled with the filament bulbs which have become so popular over the last couple of years. From the outside, they give the impression that some sort of 19th century laboratory lies within.

The horseshoe bar dominates the premises but my eye was drawn to the blown-up newspaper front pages which covered some of the walls. From the Beatles in America to the death of Elvis via a  Simon Cowell kiss and tell, the display makes for a fun talking point.

Exotic dishes

The bar menu is a little more adventurous than many without doing anything to frighten the horses. Of course, there are burgers and fish ‘n’ chips on there but they are flanked by more exotic dishes like the lightly curried coconut chicken which comes with a cucumber and red onion salad plus a mango and chilli mayo.

I liked the sound of the chicken schnitzel focaccia with Lee & Perrins roast onions and basil mayo.
