A Scottish crustacea bar is at the heart of the Galvin Brasserie de Luxe

The 5pm Restaurants blog is very proud to point out that the Pompadour by Galvin; Galvin Brasserie de Luxe and Peacock Alley are all now 5pm members.

Together they form the food offering at Edinburgh’s lovingly refurbished Caledonian, a Waldorf Astoria Hotel.

Landmark hotel

Many moons ago, your correspondent was a night shift room service waiter at The Caley and I have fond memories of the place. It’s great to see one of Edinburgh’s landmark hotels being on the receiving end of much love and attention.

You can click on the links above to read more about each of the venues but, for me, the stand-out venue is The Pompadour by Galvin. First opened in 1925, in Edinburgh it has long been known  as the place you go to propose marriage.

Memorable meals

Not that you need to do anything quite as dramatic to have a memorable time there.

It’s all been lovingly restored so that the intricate cornicing and delicate murals are back at their best. Michelin-starred chefs, Chris and Jeff Galvin, have revitalised the food offer and the menus are now bursting with classic French dishes which use the very best Scottish ingredients. Craig Sandle, formerly of number one at The Balmoral, heads up the kitchen on a day to day basis.

Regular readers with long memories may recall that we posted a blog about The Pomp when it opened. Chef Sandle’s food was terrific, especially the chicken which was cooked with foie gras and Armagnac inside a pig’s bladder.

Big Deal on Champagne afternoon tea

Look out for a Big Deal on afternoon tea at the Peacock Alley which will be running next week. Including a glass of Pommery Champagne, the offer is for one of Peacock Alley’s seasonal speciality afternoon teas which feature amazing cake creations from the talented pastry chef.
