Got a lion-sized appetite? Make tracks for Shebeen.

Shebeen, the South African bar which opened on Edinburgh’s Dock Place a couple of years back, appears to have upped sticks and moved to the city centre; on Morrison Street, just off Lothan Road, to be exact.

If the old Shebeen was about South African sport and drinks then the new Shebeen is all about South African sport and drinks plus steaks. Whopping, great, humungous steaks.

Lion-sized steaks

The braai or barbecue is at the heart of the operation with locally sourced beef being hung for five weeks before the chef gets to work on it.

The steaks come in two sizes: cheetah and the larger lion. So a cheetah sirloin will set you back £15.95 while a lion-sized sirloin is £17.95 including chips or a tomato and onion rice salad.

On the menu, there is no indication of what weight their T-bone steak is but, judging from their Facebook pics, it could feed an entire pride of lions.

Tackle the Jo’Burger

Fans of Man Vs Food style challenges may want to take on the Jo’Burger: a twelve inch, 1.2 kilo beef patty served in a custom-baked twelve inch bun. It’s designed to feed four people. Or maybe two if you are starving.

Less daunting is the wide array of South African foods such as Boerewors sausage rolls, potjie stew and bunny chow, the Durban dish made by hollowing out half a loaf of bread and filling it with curry.

Naturally South Africa dominates the wine list and Windhoek and Castle beer are also available for any home sick South Africans.
