After about five years of trading, Pink Olive on Edinburgh’s West Nicolson Street has thrown in the towel and a new venture, Sylvesters, has stepped into the ring.

A family-run affair, it has Kieron Sylvester looking after business in the kitchen while Nikki Sylvester takes the executive manager’s role. Even the once retired Dad is involved. Before retirement, Pa Sylvester was one of Scotland’s top accountants but he has picked up the calculator again to help guide Sylvesters keep to the financial path of righteousness.

All day opening

Close to the main sprawl of Edinburgh Uni, Sylvesters hopes to attract early bird scholars with a solid breakfast menu. From pecan, honey and cranberry granola to good old breakfast rolls and, of course, the full Scottish, it’s all there.

At lunch, dishes like the pollock and chips; deli sandwiches and gourmet salads hover between the £5 and £8 mark while the house burger, served with Asian slaw, home cut chips and Sylvester’s signature relish, weighs in at £10.95.

Value

The pre-theatre menu offers good value at £9.95 for two courses or £12.95 for three.

For the main evening menu, the kitchen steps up a gear with starters like the smoked haddock and caper fishcake or the haggis bonbons with spicy chilli and ginger jam.

Superfood salad

Main courses will be along the lines of the Oriental confit of duck leg with spiced Puy lentils, fine beans and red wine jus or, if you are feeling virtuous, tuck into Sylvester’s superfood salad: spinach, exotic leaves, toasted cashew nuts, couscous, edamame beans, harissa vegetables and feta cheese.
