Time travel to the Fifties and beyond with the Vintage Festival, part of this year’s Merchant City Festival

For months now, the world has held its breath while waiting for one of the most momentous events to ever happen in Great Britain.

We are, of course, talking about Glasgow’s Merchant City Festival which kicks off tomorrow.

Now in its twelfth year, the festival promises five days filled with street art, music, dance, theatre, design, heritage, film, visual art, comedy and, of course, food & drink.

The programme can be viewed from here but one or two of the more foodie events in particular caught out eye.

Get a shimmy on

We liked the cut of the jib displayed by the Vintage festival which is taking place over the weekend under the umbrella of the Merchant City Festival. Held in the Old Fruitmarket, it aims to celebrate seven decades of British cool from art to design via music, fashion and food.

On Saturday, there will be a Charleston Brunch in the Old Fruitmarket. The attractions include covert cocktails; busting some flapper moves and a brunch menu which includes Bees’ Knees Bacon and Eggs; Putting on the Ritz Pancakes and Dappers’ and Flappers’ Fresh Orange Juice.

Exotic vinyl

We also liked the sound of the Tiki Lounge in the City Halls. Exotic vinyl and even more exotic cocktails are on the menu.

Naturally, the Merchant City’s restaurants and bars are joining in the fun. At Corinthian, they are running vintage cocktail classes in Charlie Parkers.

Street markets

There will be live music stages at Blackfriars and at the Brunswick Merchant City Hotel while a series of continental street markets will run for the duration of the festival.

If you intend to eat in the Merchant City over the weekend then booking in advance would be wise.
