Andy Murray: first a Wimbledon champion and now a burger

Here at 5pm Restaurant HQ, we knew it would only be a matter of time before Andy Murray’s Wimbledon triumph was commemorated in food form.

To be honest, we’re surprised that our inbox wasn’t crammed with press releases for Murray marmalade, meatloaf and meringue by about 7pm on Sunday evening.

Murray bangers

Before the final, we already knew that sushi played a vital part in his training regime and we had also heard of Scottish butchers making Andy Murray sausages filled with strawberries and Champagne.

In Edinburgh’s Leith, Bond No 9 even came up with the Perfect Serve cocktail to mark Andy’s progress through the tournament.

But it took until yesterday before the Murray tribute food meme really started to roll.

Murray Mint milkshake

We liked the efforts by Steak restaurant in Edinburgh. They are mulling over whether or not to develop an Andy Murray Mint milkshake.

However, unless you know different, then pride of place should go to the SoLIta Bar and Grill in Manchester’s hip Northern Quarter. They have come up with a tongue and cheek little number called the Murray Burger.

The name isn’t so exciting but the dish is described as being made with ‘Aberdeen Angus beef patty, deep-fried haggis, Irn Bru and whiskey BBQ sauce, Monterey JOCK cheese and “nae lettuce”‘.

We’re grimacing at the Jock/Jack thing but the ‘nae lettuce’ swung it for us.

Big Manc thrashed

Apparently, the best seller at SoLIta (surely they should have renamed themselves as the Saltire Bar and Grill?) is usually the Big Manc but the current Murray mania has knocked the Manc off centre court.

If this old Telegraph piece is to be believed then Andy is no stranger to the idea of mixing up food and tennis players. Novak Yorkie-ovic, Prawn Bjorg and, of course, Egg Rusedski have all crossed his mind.
