The 5pm blog recently spent a fun night at EH2 Tempus in Edinburgh’s George Hotel.

The George Street restaurant was launching its new summer menu with a tasting of the key dishes.

Stand-out starter

Crispy duck served with broccoli, bacon and pine nut with a sesame and honey dressing was the stand-out starter for me while the pan-fried bream fillet was cleverly paired with a fennel ragout.

Dedicated meat-eaters might prefer the slow cooked pork belly which comes with a braised cheek fritter and a cheeky salsa verde. Any dish that contains two types of pork can be fairly confident of winning favour around these parts.

From the desserts, I liked the creme brûlée made with Illy coffee and Valrohna white chocolate.

Complimentary wine

If that sounds as though it might float your boat then EH2 Tempus is currently running a 5pm offer where diners will receive a complimentary half bottle of house wine and a dessert when they order two courses from the a la carte.

Their early bird menu with two courses at £14.95 also looks a bit of a steal.

Rooftop terrace

The evening finished with drinks on the hotel’s roof terrace. It’s a spot which I never knew existed but, if you get the chance, get up there. The skyline views of the capital are drop dead stunning.

Finally, our tasting night also involved sampling some of the restaurant’s wines which are supplied by Bibendum. The wine merchants have recently brought out a neat little app which can help users easily navigate any wine list or food matching task.

It’s called Plonk and it’s available for free, for the moment anyway, from the iTunes store.
